TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — The Dogwood Health Trust independent monitor for Mission Hospital held a second listening session on March 10 in Transylvania County for residents to get updates and weigh-in on Mission’s ownership by HCA.

The independent monitor was established to ensure HCA lives up to its 2019 purchase agreement for the Mission Hospital system. In recent assessments from the last couple of years, the independent monitor has found that HCA has not been compliant with all of its requirements.

MISSION HOSPITAL IS NO LONGER UNDER ‘IMMEDIATE JEOPARDY,’ CEO SAYS

These public sessions follow the recent “immediate jeopardy” status Mission was under by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The status was removed following a survey that ended on Feb. 13, after CMS approved the hospital’s Enhanced Plan of Correction on Jan. 29.

But the independent monitor said it remains concerned since this is the third time in two years that Mission has been put under the immediate jeopardy status.

“We’re concerned about the fact that they were in immediate jeopardy now for a third time,” Jerry Coya from the independent monitor told News 13. “What we are really looking at is the compliance with the assessment purchase and whether HCA is keeping its promises to the community.”

The independent monitor will continue to monitor the agreement and make sure that HCA complies with the rules.
