WASHINGTON (WLUK) — Our nation’s lawmakers continue to spar over their stance on the United States’ war with Iran — and that includes Wisconsin’s two senators.
In a Connect to Congress interview Wednesday, Republican Sen. Ron Johnson praised the strikes authorized by President Donald Trump, saying it has been “such a successful military campaign against the menace that Iran is.”

“We had to act before we could no longer act. I support the president’s decision on this, and the last thing we need to do is show a divided Congress to provide aid and comfort to our enemies,” he said.
Johnson expressed confidence that Trump will ensure the conflict in the Middle East is not long-lasting.
“I would say President Trump is, of the presidents of my lifetime, the least likely president to get us involved in a long-term war. He’s actually a peace monger, but he recognizes you only achieve peace through strength, and he realizes when there’s a threat — like [Venezuelan President Nicolás] Maduro as a narco-terrorist, or the Ayatollahs when they’re rushing toward developing nuclear weapons, their missile stockpile, their drone stockpile — that you have to act before you no longer can act,” said Johnson.
This is not risk-free. It’s a bold move, a hard decision. But I support the president in doing so.
Meanwhile, Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin has been an outspoken critic of the war since it began.
“This president went to war — a war of choice. We were not under attack. We were not under imminent threat of attack. And the American people, through their elected members of Congress, have not had a voice in this,” Baldwin said during a CNN interview. “I want this war to end. I want to prevent other service members from dying. I want to stop the waste of billions of dollars of taxpayer money.”
