Rare ‘Cougar Shadow’ returns this weekend to Arizona’s Superstition Mountains

  • March 12, 2026

APACHE JUNCTION, AZ (AZFamily) — It’ll be a sight to behold in the mountains of the far East Valley.

Officials with Visit Mesa said that visitors and Arizonans alike will be able witnesses one of the state’s most unique natural phenomena: the “Cougar Shadow.“

“The shadow forms when the setting sun creates the illusion of a mountain lion stretching across the rugged cliffs of the mountain,” explained Zoey Knoebel with Visit Mesa in a news release.

The best time to view it? About 30 minutes before sunset. Locals previously told Arizona’s Family that the intersection near Goldfield Road and Superstition Boulevard is a good spot to see the spectacle.

“From this vantage point, spectators may have a chance to see the shadow take shape as it crawls across the mountainside,” Visit Mesa explained.

If you miss this chance, you’ll have to wait till September for another opportunity to see this legendary mountain beast.
