TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – As spring-like weather graces the city, Tucson Wildlife Center officials are urging residents to be cautious during yard clean-ups to protect local wildlife. Mourning Dove nestlings are particularly vulnerable during this time, as their nests can be easily disturbed during tree and shrub trimming.
According to TWC, Mourning Doves, which reside in Tucson year-round, often build their delicate nests in small branch forks, shrubs or even on patio lights. TWC is currently experiencing an influx of these nestlings after spring yard work displaces them.
Residents are encouraged to check for nesting activity before trimming or clearing areas. Delaying such activities for a few weeks can allow young birds to safely leave their nests. TWC also highlights that Western Yellow Bats, owls and cottontails are also raising families during this season and can be found in various natural and manmade structures.
If a baby animal is found, TWC advises keeping pets secured and contacting the center for guidance. Their website also offers a Frequently Asked Questions section to assist with wildlife-related inquiries.
For those interested in supporting TWC’s efforts, donations can be made through their website.Â
