Omaha planning to send firefighters to assist with Nebraska wildfires

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – As part of a coordinated statewide response, Omaha Fire Department crews are heading to western Nebraska to help fight wildfires burning in that area.

Mayor John Ewing Jr.’s office confirmed with First Alert 6 on Saturday that the city was planning to send personnel to assist crews battling fires across the state.

In an news release sent Saturday night, OFD confirmed that eight firefighters and three fire response vehicles are being deployed at 5 a.m. Sunday to Keith County, near the Panhandle, to combat the Cottonwood Fire in Lincoln County and the fatal Morrill County fire, which had burned more than 450,000 acres as of Saturday evening.

​“This is rather unprecedented,” Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said in a Saturday night news release. “In the last several decades, OFD has not sent fire crews outside of the local area.”

The OFD vehicles headed west include a fire engine that can be used for structural protection as well as active fire suppression; a tanker to bring water to remote areas; and a “brush truck” designed for off-road situations and fast-moving grass fires.

​“Our hearts go out to the residents of Keith County,” Ewing said in the news release. ”Omaha stands ready to support our neighbors. By deploying these resources, we are providing critical relief to local crews while ensuring that our own city remains fully protected and staffed for local emergencies.”

As the OFD resources are being dispatched as part of the state’s emergency response, all costs associated with OFD’s support, including overtime pay, will be paid for by the Governor’s Emergency Fund. The crews will remain in Keith County for seven days, or as long as needed to protect lives and property from advancing firelines.

“I am extremely proud of the professionalism our firefighters demonstrate as they support fellow responders and communities across Nebraska during these challenging conditions,” Bossman said in the release.

Gov. Jim Pillen said in a social media post Saturday that additional assistance was also being coordinated out of Lincoln, Columbus, and other Nebraska cities.

Eleven certified wildfire responders from the Lincoln Fire Department left Saturday night. Columbus Fire Department is sending six firefighters and a grass fire vehicle to assist for 48 hours.

“Nebraskans helping Nebraskans in time of crisis,” he said in the post.

Pillen also said Saturday that he may possibly reach out to neighboring states to obtain additional mutual aid.
