Speculation about the San Francisco 49ers potentially signing veteran pass rusher Joey Bosa doesn’t appear to be fading anytime soon. Bosa is the older brother of 49ers star Nick Bosa, and the possibility of the two lining up together in Santa Clara would certainly generate plenty of headlines.
Now, the brothers’ mother, Cheryl Bosa, is adding fuel to the speculation.
Cheryl recently shared an edited image on Instagram showing her two sons side by side in 49ers uniforms. The post quickly sparked online discussion, with some fans wondering whether she might know something others don’t.
Of course, the post may simply be Cheryl campaigning for the 49ers to sign Joey Bosa. It wouldn’t be the first time she has done so. She publicly pushed for San Francisco to sign the veteran pass rusher last year, but Joey ultimately signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills.
Cheryl also advocated for the Los Angeles Chargers to trade Bosa to the 49ers in 2024.
Meanwhile, pass rush remains one of San Francisco’s most pressing offseason needs. The 49ers’ defense recorded just 20 sacks last season—the fewest in the NFL by a significant margin. Nick Bosa and last year’s first-round pick, Mykel Williams, are both working their way back from ACL injuries, while Bryce Huff recently announced his retirement.
That lack of depth and last season’s poor performance have kept Joey Bosa’s name connected with San Francisco.
It’s also worth noting that the veteran defender has not recorded double-digit sacks in a season since 2021, and he will turn 31 ahead of the 2026 campaign. At this stage of his career, Bosa may project more as a rotational contributor rather than a full-time edge rusher.
Still, for a team in clear need of pass-rush help, Joey Bosa—at the right price—could represent a sensible addition for the 49ers.
