15 first-round matches are scheduled on Day 1 of the ATP Miami Open, and some big names of the past and present are in action. This article features 2021 champion, Hubert Hurkacz, who will take on home player Ethan Quinn. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate. But who will advance?
ATP Miami Day 1 Predictions
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard vs Camilo Ugo Carabelli
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Camilo Ugo Carabelli reached the third round here last year as a lucky loser and pushed Novak Djokovic to a tiebreak. However, he is still finding his feet on this surface and will find it hard to gain any rhythm facing Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Frenhman has struggled so far this season, but these courts should help his elite serve, and it will be tough to break him.
Prediction: Perricard in 2
Zizou Bergs vs Jenson Brooksby
Head-to-Head: Bergs 0-1 Brooksby
Zizou Bergs started the season strongly in the United Cup, but has since lost all momentum and desperately needs some match wins. Jenson Brooksy is as tough as it comes in the first round, and I think he has a great chance to get his second win over Bergs. The American’s unorthodox tennis is not easy to deal with, especially when not in form.
Prediction: Brooksby in 3
Reilly Opelka vs Nuno Borges
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Reilly Opelka pushed Ben Shelton in Indian Wells and should like his chances to do some damage here with his serve. It will be extremely hard to break him, and with Nuno Borges’ dip in form, I will back the American player to have more confidence and win the tiebreaks if needed. Borges has never won a match here; he might sneak a set, but Opelka should prevail to face Jack Draper in the second round.
Prediction: Opelka in 3
Hubert Hurkacz vs Ethan Quinn
Head-to-Head: Hurkacz 0-1 Quinn
22-year-old Ethan Quinn shocked many with his straight-sets win over an in-form Hubert Hurkacz at this year’s Australian Open. Hurkacz has not won a match since and is on a six-match losing streak in all competitions. Miami has been a happy hunting ground for the Polish player, and he will hope to turn the tide here. Quinn is improving rapidly, and his confidence will be high after winning the Phoenix Challenger last week. Both players have great serves, but I will go with the in-form player.
Prediction: Quinn in 3
