MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) — Authorities are investigating after nearly a dozen dead coyotes were discovered dumped on a wooded hillside near a sidewalk off Gallia Drive in Miami Township.

Township Administrator Jim Brett said the township has received calls from residents concerned about a strong odor coming from the area.

Brett is asking anyone with home surveillance footage that may have captured suspicious activity to contact township officials.

“We’re trying to figure out exactly what happened,” Brett said.

He added that the coyotes do not appear to have died from natural causes or poisoning.

Officials are urging the public to avoid the area and not approach or touch the animals, noting that wild animals can carry diseases.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife is also involved in the investigation. Spokesperson Kathy Garza-Behr said the agency did not remove the coyotes because they are located on private property.

Based on evidence observed at the scene, Garza-Behr said the coyotes appear to have been shot.

“The investigation is ongoing, primarily as a private property litter investigation,” said Garza-Behr.
