It’s been well-documented that newly-acquired defenseman David Jircek’s first game with the Phantoms was, at the very least, an exciting one — the clip of him tripping over his own feet, falling down, and leaving the Charlotte player uncovered to walk in and score got a lot of play, but after that challenging start to his Phantoms tenure, Jircek has really settled in quite nicely, and showcased some of the most exciting elements of his game as he’s continued to get comfortable and ramp up.

On the whole, Jiricek has stepped in and, despite some concerns flagged about his skating and this being very much still a work in progress, fit quite seamlessly into the uptempo, quick transitioning game that the Phantoms play. He’s been another effective puck mover for them, and despite a few misplays, has largely been steady in his play away from the puck. But, of course, the flashier offensive bits of his game are the ones which are drawing, rightfully, the most attention to him over these early goings.

Jiricek was very quickly able to even the scales, as it were, in his debut, putting up a goal to tie the game and ultimately force overtime, and put on display just how valuable he can be to this team’s power play. They’ve already gotten quite positive results from Christian Kyrou running one unit from the point, but it’s been a challenge to find someone who can take over the other unit, and Jiricek has stepped quite seamlessly into that spot. Not only is his distributing quick and accurate enough to keep their cycle going with some pace — and his quickness at the blueline has been good enough to make a few big keeps so far — but the strength of his shot to get through traffic from a distance has him remaining a scoring threat at all times.

Jiricek’s patience with the puck has been noticeable, and while it hasn’t leaned too far over into the realm of over-playing chances, it’s shown a level of confidence with the puck that’s made him especially effective. It contributed to him picking up another power play goal last night, but he’s been showing that same collectedness in making plays across all situations.

Five games is a small sample, to be sure, but Jiricek’s six points through these first five games remain a head-turning stat, and mark a well-earned reward for the sound play he’s been delivering over this span. He’s had a few hiccups along the way, a few miscues, to be sure, but he’s bought in quickly to his new team’s system, and as the team has worked to reinforce playing hard and building good, responsible habits towards delivering winning hockey, he’s jumped right in playing an engaged game, as another player pulling in the same direction. It’s made for some flashy individual results, but given the large role he’s playing, it’s also made for a key contributing factor to the success — three wins in this last four games against three of the top teams in the East — that the team has been putting together over the last week.

Jiricek acknowledged right from the jump that he was excited for this opportunity with this new team, and he’s certainly making the most of it so far, and working well to endear himself to his coaching staff. There’s still a lot of potential in the complete package of his game, and that’s never been plainer to see.

“I think, it’s just we all know what his skill set is and we got to empower that skill set, right?” head coach John Snowden said after last night’s game. “Like he’s a big man. He can skate, he can shoot, he can make plays, he’s showing that he can make plays, he can he passes the puck very well. So, it’s just empowering him to do the things that he does really well, and then reinforcing the things that we want to see him grow with and really turn him into that sixth overall pick that he has the potential to be. And I think that everybody that’s watching him play right now for us, they can you can see the upside to him. And I think we’re just, you know, giving him that confidence that you’re very, very good player. We’re super excited to have you, we’re going to put you right into the fray, you’re going to get important situations and he’s taken full advantage of it so far.”

Jiricek hasn’t come in as a fully developed, complete player, but he’s committed to making it work here, and the coaching staff sees a sound foundation from which they can build up with him. There’s still a good bit of work that needs to be done down the stretch here, but the early returns have been undoubtedly positive, and Jiricek’s managed to build up a whole lot of optimism about where he can go from here.
