BAGHDAD, Iraq (WCSC) — The United States invaded Iraq on March 20, 2003.
President George W. Bush said the mission was to disarm Iraq, end Saddam Hussein’s support for terrorism and free the Iraqi people. U.S. forces never found weapons of mass destruction.
Bush declared major combat just weeks later. The war continued for years.
Saddam Hussein was captured in December 2003. He was tried for crimes against humanity and executed in 2006.
The war killed more than 3,000 American troops and tens of thousands of Iraqis.
