The Athletic has live coverage of today’s England squad announcement.
Kobbie Mainoo and Lewis Hall have been handed recalls to the England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
The Manchester United midfielder has been rewarded for a return to the first-team picture at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick and a return to form, while Hall has impressed for Newcastle United following an injury lay-off.
England face Uruguay on March 27 before taking on Japan on March 31, with both matches being played at Wembley.
Elsewhere, Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has not played for his country for five years, is in, as is Everton midfielder James Garner and Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Lewis Steele – 13 years after his last appearance for the Under-21s.
Mainoo’s United teammate Harry Maguire is also back, more than a year after last appearing for his country, along with fellow centre-half Fikayo Tomori of AC Milan, while Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace is also selected.
The squad is Thomas Tuchel’s last before he will finalise his selection for this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Mainoo has not featured for England since the Nations League win over the Republic of Ireland in September 2024, under interim head coach Lee Carsley.
The midfielder, 20, was largely overlooked by former United head coach Ruben Amorim but has returned to favour under Carrick, starting all nine of his games in charge, completing 90 minutes in all but one.
As a teenager, Mainoo broke into Gareth Southgate’s England first-choice team during the last European Championship and played a key role in the run to the final. He has won 10 caps to date.
It has been over a year since Maguire, 33, won the last of his 64 caps for his country, also last featuring under Carsley. Like Mainoo, he has benefited from Carrick’s appointment at Old Trafford, starting every game in the former United midfielder’s tenure.
Tuchel hinted at recalls for Mainoo and Maguire in February, saying the pair, and United left-back Luke Shaw, were “absolutely back in the frame” for England selection.
Calvert-Lewin joined Leeds from Everton in the summer and has 10 Premier League goals in 26 games for Daniel Farke’s side.
Calvert-Lewin’s former Everton team-mate Garner, 25, has represented England at every youth level from the under-17s to the under-21s but has never received a senior call-up.
Hall’s good form with Newcastle has been rewarded, and the 21-year-old left-back could now add to his two caps to date over the next fortnight, while Wharton keeps his place after being part of the last group.
England eased through qualifying for the tournament with a perfect eight wins out of eight, with victories over Serbia and Albania earned last time out in November.
Tuchel’s side have been drawn against Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L of this summer’s tournament, and will tune up for those games with two further friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica in Florida in June.
Tuchel was set to see his contract run out following the end of the World Cup, but signed a new deal in February that will now take him through to the European Championships in 2028.
