HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Board of Water Supply is urging all residents to conserve water and use it for essential purposes due to power outages affecting the system.
Officials said to only use water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene.
BWS said power outages are impacting the utility’s entire water system serving the North Shore community from Waialua and Mokuleia to Kawela.
Officials said residents, especially those without power, should keep water use to an absolute minimum and should not fill containers at this time.
BWS said the pumps need electricity to operate. During a power outage, the utility has a limited ability to pump water from its wells and other water sources into reservoirs.
Until power can be restored, the water left in the reservoirs will be all that is available, officials said.
“By limiting water use, you will do your part to help your community have enough water for their needs during the outage,” said BWS Manager and Chief Engineer Ernie Lau.
The utility said that after power is restored, residents should continue to conserve water as the electrically powered pumps need time to replenish reservoirs to normal levels.
BWS said it is also working to restore water service to customers in Ahuimanu who have no water or low water pressure on Friday due to an earlier break on a property line at Valley of the Temples that drained the community’s reservoir. They hope to restore service Saturday morning.
