Customers in multiple communities in Beaver County may be left with little to no water for more than 24 hours following multiple water main breaks on Monday. The Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa said in a release that a water main break on a 16-inch transmission line led to a “signifigant loss of water in the tanks within Aliquippa.”The break happened on a line on the exit ramp of Route 51. Due to the break, the MWAA will also be shutting off water service to parts of Aliquippa, Hopewell, Raccoon, and Independence as repairs are made.”Affected customers will be without water until repairs are made and the plant can resume operations,” the MWAA said in the release. The water authority is also urging customers who do have water service to conserve water. Following the incident, Aliquippa Dwan Walker said in a post on Facebook that the City of Aliquippa and the water authority have declared a state of emergency due to “three major main breaks impacting 22,000 residents.” “We are actively coordinating with Governor Josh Shapiro’s Office, the American Red Cross, Rob Matzie, Chris Deluzio, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Sen. McCormick, Beaver County Emergency Services, and The Salvation Army to bring critical resources into the city,” Walker said. The mayor said authority and engineering crews are working around the clock to make the repairs. He said officials will be bringing bottled water for residents impacted, with distribution locations to be announced. He said water service in multiple areas could be impacted for up to three days. “We understand how difficult this situation is and appreciate your patience as we work to restore service as quickly and safely as possible,” the mayor said in the post.
