Can you be one of the greatest players in the history of your sport without winning a championship?
It’s a question that plagued LeBron James for most of his young career before becoming a villain in the eyes of fans by leaving Cleveland for South Beach to win a pair of titles with the Miami Heat.
Mike Trout, one of the best baseball players of his generation, has never even won a playoff game as a member of the Los Angeles Angels, and it’s counted against him.
And when it comes to women’s basketball, the same debate rages on about Indiana Fever’s talisman, Caitlin Clark. The leading scorer in NCAA Division I basketball history, for either men or women, she led the Iowa Hawkeyes to the national championship but never crossed the finish line.
In her first few years in the WNBA, it’s been the same, putting up strong numbers for the Fever, but either through inexperience or injury, not making it over the top teams in the league.
On Sunday, Fox Sports released its ranking of the top 10 women in college basketball history, and it sparked renewed discussion about Clark’s place in history.

UConn’s Brenna Stewart, who went 151-5 in her college career, winning four national championships and being named Final Four Most Outstanding Player in every tournament, took the top spot.
No-brainer. A three-time National Player of the Year with a winning record that looks more like someone playing a video game on easy mode than an actual team.
In second? Fox Sports put Clark above the likes of UConn’s Diana Taurasi, USC’s Cheryl Miller, and Tennessee’s Chamique Holdsclaw.
While some people believed Clark should be first on the list, discussing how she did the most with the least number of teammates around her, others came out disparaging Fox for overrating Clark’s place.
“Clark is way too high for not winning anything.”
“This list is straight garbage,” another fan posted on social media. “Get Caitlin Clark out of the Top 10. Where’s Sheryl Swoopes, Clarissa Davis, Sue Bird, or Kelsey Plum??”
“Why is Caitlin Clark on this list?” asked another user on X. “She never won a national title, and you’ve got her above legends. The hype for this girl is ridiculous. She only played 13 games in her second season, and yet people want to claim she’s the reason the WNBA is taken off. They’re wrong. Aja [Wilson] is why.”
While fans on the internet will continue to discuss where Clark places in several rankings across history, the Fever point guard is gearing up for the new WNBA campaign to see if she can capture that elusive championship that evades her.
