Here’s a confession that is sure to make you question my sanity: I’ve had the same iPhone since 2018.

Why, you ask? Two reasons, really: because I never really see the benefit in upgrading an iPhone since later model improvements don’t impress me and because…well, I’m lazy and don’t feel like getting an upgrade yet.

But now that my iPhone XS has stayed by my side for so long, I’ve begun noticing that its battery drain rate is faster than it once was. No surprise — older phones tend to struggle with battery life.

I gave ChatGPT this prompt: “Why is my phone battery draining so quickly? I have an iPhone XS”

In just a few seconds, the chatbot turned my suspicions into legit worries when it laid out the main issue of my smartphone’s fast battery drain error.

It deemed an aging battery as the biggest culprit, especially for an iPhone XS from 2018 with a battery that’s likely degraded since then. To get a better look at how my battery is doing, ChatGPT gave me some clear commands: go to my Settings, tap on Battery, then go to Battery Health & Charging to check on the percentage stated by the Maximum Capacity section.

With my iPhone’s battery coming in at 77 percent, ChatGPT notified me that my battery is well below the standard rate for most phones. 85 to 100 percent is normal and below 80 percent is worse than that rate, so I knew a battery replacement was in order.

On top of that main issue, ChatGPT gave me a list of easily recognizable errors that signal your phone’s battery is getting drained faster than it should:
