ALTMAR, N.Y. — Officials with Oswego County are warning the public that the Salmon River is undergoing high flow due to heavy rain.
Officials said the heavy rain came through the night of March 30. However, more heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected on the night of March 31. Officials warned that some low-level areas along the river may flood.
The public is encouraged to stay away from the banks of the Salmon River from the Refield Reservoir to Lake Ontario, including the Village of Pulaski and the Hamlet of Altmar, until flow conditions subside.
Oswego County is currently under a flood watch until 8 p.m. on April 1. A severe thunderstorm watch is also in effect until 9 p.m. on March 31.
“We urge everyone in the county to be aware of their surroundings, as low-lying areas on streams and near roadways can flood,” said Cathleen Palmitesso, director of the Oswego County Emergency Management Office.
Brookfield has declared a high flow condition according to their emergency action plan, which indicates that flow conditions could cause flooding downstream of the Salmon River Hydroelectric Project.
