AND CAPTAIN ROY TAYLOR, WHAT’S GOING ON BELOW YOU? YES, SIR. THIS IS EASTBOUND ROUTE 70 BETWEEN THE HOWARD COUNTY LINE AND THE BELTWAY. AUTO FIRE IS IN THE MEDIAN STRIP HERE. THE STATE POLICE ARE ON THE SCENE. THEY’RE TRYING TO DIVERT ALL THE TRAFFIC INTO THE SLOW LANE. IN FACT, IT LOOKS LIKE THEY’RE BLOCKING THE ENTIRE EASTBOUND SIDE OF THE ROUTE 70 HERE BECAUSE OF THE EXPLOSIONS THAT WE’RE SEEING COMING FROM THE AUTO FIRE DEPARTMENT JUST ARRIVED ON THE SCENE. THEY’RE GETTING READY TO TRY AND DO AN AGGRESSIVE ATTACK AND EXTINGUISH THIS FIRE. IT’S EVEN STARTING THE GRASS TO BURN HERE. WE DON’T HAVE A CAUSE. WE DO NOT HAVE REPORTS OF INJURIES. A fire engulfed a car Wednesday afternoon on the shoulder of eastbound Interstate 70 near the Beltway, SKY 11 reported.

Around 4:45 p.m., Maryland state troopers were blocking the eastbound lanes amid explosions from the fire.

Westbound traffic was also backed up, SKY 11 Capt. Roy Taylor reported.
