WASHINGTON — The Philadelphia 76ers ruled Joel Embiid out for their contest against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday due to an illness. The 2023 MVP winner revealed he was sick after the loss to the Miami Heat on Monday and the Sixers ruled him out early on Wednesday morning.

The Sixers did not list Embiid on the injury report on Tuesday, but coach Nick Nurse gave an update on the big fella before the matchup against the Wizards.

“We had activities this morning, film and stuff,” said Nurse. “He didn’t make the film after he kinda reported some sickness from Miami the other day. Medical, obviously, went to see him, and wanted him to get checked out by a doctor. We, obviously, decided to rule him out at that point.”

With that being said, Embiid certainly made a case on Twitter that he was going to play.

He did play through the illness in Miami so one has to wonder why he wasn’t able to give it a go against the Wizards. However, according to Nurse, the medical staff wants him to go see an actual doctor.

“He, obviously, played the other night through some of it,” Nurse explained. “But they just decided that a couple days here in a row that he needed to be checked out.”

When asked if he knew exactly what the Embiid illness is, Nurse is not sure. When he sees the doctor back in Philadelphia, the team will likely have more information then.

“I do not,” Nurse stated. “Just illness. Sickness, yeah.”

The Sixers will return home to play host to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday for a back-to-back.
