In the world of professional sports, in which athletes often share similar lifestyles and demands in their everyday schedule, sometimes it just clicks in a way that goes beyond the game itself. Sometimes, from that shared understanding, something deeper is born.

Such was the case for Bam Adebayo and A’ja Wilson, who for a long time supported each other’s respective journeys from afar, until their relationship became more public. It was a confirmation of what many fans had already kind of suspected. This was more than just a friendship between two elite basketball players and Olympic gold medalists.

And Wilson, who is preparing for the upcoming WNBA season, shared little bits and pieces of the romance with the Miami Heat star.

“I feel like he does all the little things I don’t even have to speak of. He’ll do the smallest of things, like opening a car door when he feels like I’m overstimulated or like having just a moment where he just holds my hand and knows if I’m getting too high, if my anxiety is blowing out the water,” the Las Vegas Aces superstar said in her recent interview with Vogue.

Being there for one another

It seems like the approach of knowing each other without really needing to say things out loud works wonders for this power couple. Because if we go back, just three weeks ago, Bam was at the center of media attention when he dropped 83 points in a highly debated victory against the Washington Wizards, and thus surpassed Kobe Bryant on the list of single-game leading scorers. And, you guessed it, A’ja was there courtside watching him do his magic. Cheering and supporting her loved one.

Interestingly, Wilson is also leading the women’s competition in points scored, with 53, and it seems like their behind-the-scenes relationship really pushes them to different levels, both individually and as a couple. Having stability at home really is a game-changer, and Wilson is not afraid to make everybody else aware of that.

“He just knows to calm me down. He’s my peace, he’s my safe space…” A’ja added.

Starting a family together?

Even though Bam really stirred the waters with his performance, there is no doubt that Wilson is the more accomplished player in her realm. She is a four-time league MVP, a seven-time All-Star, and a three-time WNBA Champion. However, that does not mean their dynamic is one-sided. If anything, they often joke about how they help push each other to the next level.

Well, aside from basketball activities, the Las Vegas Aces superstar also opened up about plans for the future, including starting a family with Adebayo.

“That is always a dream,” Wilson said in an interview with TIME. “This is my life partner. Honestly, what on earth was my world before you? That’s how much he’s impacted my life, my family’s life.”

Even though nothing is public yet in that department, it all circles back to what she said from the start. In a pro-hoops world that rarely slows down, having someone who can be your peace and your safe haven makes all the difference. And both of them will hold onto that for a long time.
