Both players managed upset victories in the previous round. Riera beat the No. 8 seed Anna Blinkova, while Ortenzi stunned the home hero and defending champion Camila Osorio. Ortenzi’s triumph was particularly incredible for someone ranked No. 206. However, such shocks by significant underdogs are often followed by a drop in level, and I feel that will happen to Ortenzi.

Emiliana Arango vs Varvara Lepchenko

Head-to-head: First meeting

Lepchenko also caused a shock in the previous by round by eliminating the No. 2 seed Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. The American successfully soaked up much pressure to win that match. Arango’s game, based on solidity and defense, will provide a different challenge. I expect this to be close, but for Arango to ultimately grind out a tight victory.

Panna Udvardy vs Katarzyna Kawa

Head-to-head: Kawa 3-0 Udvardy

Last year’s runner-up Kawa overcame two-time champion Tatjana Maria to reach this stage. Udvardy defeated Julieta Pareja 6-0 2-6 6-1. Kawa has not achieved much since her run 12 months ago in Bogota, but this event brings out her best tennis. She was so confident and secure against Maria, and I am predicting another strong performance from the Pole here.

Marie Bouzkova vs Darja Semenistaja

Head-to-head: First meeting

Bouzkova will be fresh for this match after Hanne Vandewinkel retired after the first set of their round of 16 match. There will almost certainly be several lengthy rallies due to neither woman hitting their groundstrokes with overwhelming pace. I trust Bouzkova to implement her solid baseline game more effectively to reach the semifinals.
