SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. — A rare visitor cruised through the Swinomish Channel on Tuesday morning – a gray whale!
The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office said the whale was seen swimming down the waterway on Tuesday.
The SCSO said gray whales are known to occasionally venture into Puget Sound waters while feeding, but seeing one in the Swinomish Channel is uncommon.

However, the agency noted it is not the first time a gray whale has been seen there, with a similar sighting reported in May 2020.
With tulip season underway, the sheriff’s office called the sighting “a special treat” and urged anyone who sees the whale to keep a safe distance and give it plenty of space to travel naturally.
