Cameron Diaz is developing — and considering starring in — a sequel to Shelley Long’s 1989 comedy Troop Beverly Hills

The comedy saw Long, now 76, portray an affluent Beverly Hills woman who becomes her daughter’s Girl Scout troop leader

Cameron Diaz is bringing a late 1980s cult comedy back to the big screen for a surprise sequel.

TriStar Pictures is currently developing a sequel to the 1989 movie Troop Beverly Hills with Diaz, 53, who is also considering starring in the movie. While no plot details were immediately available, the movie will be directed by filmmaker Clea DuVall, who also wrote the movie’s script. DuVall, 48, is known for directing the movies The Intervention and Happiest Season; as an actor, she’s appeared in movies like Argo and most recently acted in last year’s Swiped.

Troop Beverly Hills starred Shelley Long as an affluent woman named Phyllis living in Beverly Hills, Calif., who seizes an opportunity to lead her daughters’ Girl Scout troop to keep up her relationship with her daughter while going through a divorce. The movie was not considered a commercial or critical success upon its release, but it has been cited by multiple outlets as a cult classic over the last 10 years.

The movie was produced by Ava Fries, who based Troop Beverly Hills on her own experiences leading her daughter’s Girl Scout troop. Fries died in 2021 at 87 years old.

Diaz returned to the screen for the first time in a decade in 2025 with the Netflix action comedy Back in Action, which reunited her with Annie costar Jamie Foxx. She also stars alongside Keanu Reeves and Matt Bomer in Jonah Hill’s new comedy Outcome, which begins streaming on Apple TV April 10.

Diaz, who shares two children with her musician husband Benji Madden, was also photographed filming a separate movie project in New York City on March 13. On top of developing Troop Beverly Hills, she will star in a yet-to-be-titled romantic comedy directed by Stephen Merchant, which Deadline first reported on in January.

Beyond those movies, PEOPLE confirmed in July 2025 that Diaz will star as a “a single mom fighting to keep one little promise to her daughter on the absolute worst day of her life” in an action-comedy titled Bad Day. She is also expected set to reprise her iconic voice role as Princess Fiona in 2027’s Shrek 5.

Diaz will produce the sequel alongside Laurence Mark and Diaz’s business partner Katherine Power.
