Enzo Fernandez remains a Chelsea player for now, but the summer promises to be an intriguing one for the midfielder. The Blues have identified a replacement, but Liverpool are in the mix.

World Cup winner Fernandez has been linked with Real Madrid, PSG, and Atletico Madrid. It comes after the Argentine flirted unapologetically with Madrid during the international break and has been banned.

Fernandez will see out the second of his two-game ban on Sunday when Chelsea take on Man City. It is believed the Argentine ace dreams of becoming a Real Madrid player, and Chelsea must act accordingly.

Say Chelsea can only strengthen in one position this summer, which ONE would you choose?👀

While there are doubts over Madrid’s ability to afford Fernandez, Chelsea are producing a contingency list to replace the former Benfica star. At the top of that list is Wolves’ Brazil international, Joao Gomes.

Chelsea want Joao Gomes but Liverpool present a problem

Gomes has starred for Wolves since coming to the Premier League. It might have been a dismal season this time around, but Gomes continues to be a shining light for Wolves since his move back in 2023.

The former Flamengo ace has clocked up 124 appearances for the Midlands outfit. But with relegation on the horizon, his exit is inevitable. Wolves are willing to do business for £60m in the upcoming window.

That fee might even go down when relegated, according to Brazilian outlet RTI. They say that Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United all want him, with Chelsea keen to find a replacement for Fernandez.

However, there is a problem for Chelsea. The report claims Gomes has picked the club he wants to join, and it is Liverpool. The midfielder sees himself in Arne Slot’s midfield ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Chelsea’s interest in Joao Gomes is nothing new

Rewind to the summer of 2024, Chelsea wanted to sign Gomes after his first season in English football. Conor Gallagher was set to move to Atletico Madrid, and the Blues identified Gomes as a new signing.

PROVE ME WRONG: No midfielder is more perfect for Caicedo, than Barco 🔟

Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal for Barco.

These days, Chelsea have an abundance of midfield talent. Moises Caicedo is first choice, and then it has chopped and changed when it comes to partnering him. Andrey Santos, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo.

Reece James can operate in midfield but Liam Rosenior is believed to prefer him at right-back, while Fernandez has been playing further forward. Champions League qualification might do the job.
