BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Fish and Wildlife is reminding residents it’s the time of year to be bear aware.
The agency said it is already getting reports that bears are waking up. Males are active on the landscape now and will soon be followed by females and in some cases cubs.
Wardens said if you see a bear in your yard, it’s probably there for a reason, whether it’s getting into the neighbor’s trash and passing through your yard or getting into your trash or bird feeders.
“There’s a reason why that bear is coming close to people because bears don’t typically like to be around people. And the reason why they come to your yard is for food,” said Warden Abigail Serra.
If you have a nuisance bear that won’t leave, Fish and Wildlife said to make noises to keep it away and contact them.
