Retirement costs — especially healthcare and housing — are continually on the rise across America, which makes where a person chooses to retire all the more important.

There are currently nine states (Arkansas, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming) in which a retiree’s Social Security benefits aren’t taxed, giving residents there a meaningful advantage in their golden years.

Within those nine states, the cities below allow retirees to combine the tax advantages of the state with the relatively affordable housing of each metro.

Punta Gorda, Florida

This laidback Florida city offers beautiful canals, boating activities for retirees and, per Realtor.com, median home prices of about $380,000.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

According to its official website, it’s the largest city in South Dakota and boasts great healthcare access, along with a steady population growth — which helps support housing demands.

Spearfish, South Dakota

Columbia, Tennessee

Less than an hour outside of Nashville, Columbia mixes affordability with easy access to a major metro culture and economy.

Manchester, New Hampshire

In Manchester, retirees can find affordable housing for around $300,000, with views of beautiful mountains right out the window.
