The Minnesota Twins pummeled Boston Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet in his worst career outing Monday, sending the AL Cy Young Award finalist packing after just 1 2/3 innings pitched.
In all, Crochet allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on nine hits. He walked three, hit a batter and struck out just one while allowing two homers, sending his ERA skyrocketing to 7.58.
Crochet looked shell-shocked as he walked off the mound, as manager Alex Cora took him out after 55 pitches. He was replaced by reliever Jovani Moran. Crochet’s velocity was down nearly 2 mph from his season average, with his four-seamer averaging 94.9 mph compared with 96.1 mph. His cutter, sinker and sweeper were all down as well.
Though Crochet’s night carries significant concern, the Twins have beaten up on good pitchers in recent days. They entered the game sixth in the majors in runs scored and won six of seven games entering the night, sweeping the Detroit Tigers and winning a series at the Toronto Blue Jays.
In that span, they beat Tarik Skubal (four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings) and Framber Valdez (six first-inning runs, eight allowed overall), while putting up eight runs on Max Scherzer on Sunday.
