SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WSBT) — WSBT is continuing to check in on the bald eagles at St. Patrick’s County Park courtesy of the Live Bald Eagle Cam.

The eagle pair laid three eggs this season, but unfortunately none of the three will hatch according to researchers at Notre Dame.

The last egg was laid on February 27th meaning the window for hatching has now passed.

The pair’s first egg unfortunately broke early in the incubation period, most likely from physical damage. This is not uncommon.

The remaining two eggs that failed to hatch could be due to a variety of reasons including infertility or non-viability meaning embryo development is interrupted due to inadequate environmental factors or nutritional deficiencies within the egg itself.

Studies suggest that anywhere from 3% to 25% of bald eagle eggs fail to hatch under natural conditions according to University of Notre Dame Environmental Change Initiative.

This is the second year in a row that this nest has not had a successful hatch.
