NEED TO KNOW

Rory McIlroy didn’t interact too much with his playing partner on Sunday at the Masters

“I don’t think he really wanted to talk to me today,” Cameron Young told reporters

The interaction echoes McIlroy’s behavior with Bryson DeChambeau during the final round last year

It turns out, being paired with Rory McIlroy while he’s in pursuit of a Masters victory comes with silence, and lots of it.

“There is not much,” Cameron Young told reporters, according to the Golf Channel, when he was asked how much he spoke to McIlroy while playing alongside him at Augusta National on Sunday, April 12.

“I don’t think he really wanted to talk to me today,” Young, 28, added. “Sunday at the Masters in the final group, you know, don’t wish anything poorly on the guy, but we’re playing against each other. Not trying to be best friends out there.”

McIlroy, 36, weathered a roller-coaster round and saw his six-shot lead dwindle but he eventually recovered to pull off a one-shot victory, defending his 2025 title.

For his part, the golfer agreed with Young’s assessment.

“There wasn’t a ton of talk out there,” McIlroy said. “I think we both knew what we needed to do. I just needed to step up and execute.”

McIlroy’s and Young’s lack of back-and-forth was a case of déjà vu — at least for Bryson DeChambeau.

Last year, the LIV golfer had a similar experience when matched with McIlroy in the final round.

“[He] didn’t talk to me once all day,” DeChambeau, 32, said at the time. “He wouldn’t talk to me.”

McIlroy, on the cusp of finally winning an elusive Grand Slam, said at the time that he wasn’t sure why DeChambeau wanted more.

“I don’t know what he was expecting,” McIlroy, 36, told reporters last May when revisiting the controversy. “We’re trying to win the Masters. I’m not going to try to be his best mate out there.”
