SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WBTV) – A 12-foot-long alligator showed up on a front porch in North Carolina this week, police said.
The gator wandered up to a house in Southport on Tuesday, April 14.
Southport police animal control officers were called out to the home, along with state wildlife officers. They were able to safely catch and relocate the massive alligator.
Pictures of the gator showed it near a sidewalk, and then right outside the house’s front door.
Police said that as the weather starts to get warmer, the chance for alligator interactions will go up.
Alligators are common in eastern and coastal parts of North Carolina, especially near lakes, rivers, marshes, swamps and ponds.
Males can grow up to 13 feet in length and can weigh up to 500 pounds, according to North Carolina Wildlife. Alligator safety tips can be found here.
Southport is on the southern end of the North Carolina coast, about 45 minutes south of Wilmington.
