Rabid raccoon found in Greenville, vaccination clinic to be held in May

  • April 17, 2026

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The Pitt County Health Department has confirmed that a rabid raccoon was found in Greenville earlier this week.

The department says the raccoon encountered two dogs near Elm Street on Tuesday. Those dogs were unaffected as they’ve both been vaccinated.

Officials say there is no danger to people or animals.

Since 2021, Pitt County has had six other rabies cases involving a fox, a cat, and raccoons.

The animal shelter is holding a $10 drive-thru rabies vaccination clinic at the health department for the first 200 pets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 2.
