Golfers in The Villages may be noticing drought’s impact on courses

Golf courses are under increasing stress as a result of the drought in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.

With Phase 3 water restrictions now in effect, golfers may be noticing changes in golf course conditions and maintenance practices, according to the The Villages District Government.

Irrigation is being managed in accordance with Southwest Florida Water Management District guidelines, with greens and tees watered up to three times per week, fairways once per week, and rough areas not receiving irrigation. To maintain turf quality under these limitations, superintendents will place greater emphasis on hand-watering to address localized dry areas. As needed, temporary closures and adjusted rotation schedules will be implemented to support turf recovery from cart traffic.

The following executive golf courses have been shut down until further notice:

• Bonita Pass

• El Santiago (it was closed March 23 and is slated for renovation)

• Heron

• Truman

• Walnut Grove
