Dave Mustaine has suggested that his guitar influence didn’t stop with the two “Big Four” bands he’s been directly tied to.
Mustaine’s early stint in Metallica ended with his infamous 1983 dismissal, a split that fueled years of bad blood and ultimately led him to form Megadeth. He also briefly crossed paths with Slayer in 1984, when Kerry King signed on for a short-lived run as a live guitarist for Megadeth before commitments with Slayer ended that arrangement.
While King has praised Mustaine’s playing over the years, he’s also taken shots at Mustaine’s personality. That history covers three of the “Big Four” in one way or another, leaving Anthrax as the only member of that circle without a direct Mustaine chapter.
Megadeth are next set to resume touring with dates in South America and Mexico, plus a U.S. festival appearance at Sonic Temple on May 17th in Columbus, OH, followed by a European run. Additional U.S. shows are planned for July.

While speaking with Brazil’s 89 FM A Rádio Rock, Mustaine shared:
Well, I’ve been very invested in the metal community. Kerry [King, Slayer guitarist] and I played together [during the two bands’ early days], and I showed him how to play Megadeth songs, which was before [Slayer] started having all their pivotal records. Kerry and I had a really great time together.
And I wrote music in Metallica and I wrote music in Megadeth. So, I’ve been very influential with the guitar with these three bands. And when I met Scott [Ian, Anthrax guitarist] and the guys in Anthrax out in New York, same thing happened. Their first record was very different from the record they made after they met me and the guys in Metallica. So I think that’s great. I love all those bands.
