We’ve seen a number of smartphones designed for gamers in recent years, often with bleeding edge specs and unusual features like fans for active cooling, air triggers, and RGB lighting effects. And we’ve seen even more companies release mobile game controllers that turn standard phones into handheld game consoles.

But the OnePlus Ace 6 Ultra gaming phone and its optional gamepad accessory still manage to stand out.

The phone itself features a 6.8 inch display with a 165 Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Dimensity 9500 processor, a large 8600 mAh battery, and support for 120W charging, among other premium features.

But the gamepad is what really caught my attention. It snaps onto the sides of the phone and covers the back, giving you an ergonomic grip that could make your phone more comfortable to hold in two hands for extended gameplay sessions.

Unlike most mobile controllers though, this model doesn’t have any buttons at all on the front. That means it takes up less horizontal space than most controllers, while allowing you to interact with your phone by placing your thumbs on its touchscreen display.

This isn’t just about adding a more comfortable grip though. There are four rear buttons on the controller: two triggers and two buttons. OnePlus says they use micro-mechanical switches with a 1,000 Hz polling rate and 1.8ms response time.

You can also attach an optional cooling fan to the back of the gamepad, in between the buttons. It snaps in place magnetically and should help keep the phone from overheating and throttling performance.

OnePlus is starting to show off the OnePlus Ace 6 Ultra and gamepad accessory on Chinese social media ahead of a planned April 28th launch. There’s no word on how much it will cost or if or when it will be available in other regions.
