Phoenix Mercury players are excited to see where Nate Tibbetts grew up

  • April 22, 2026

PHOENIX, AZ (Dakota News Now) -The WNBA will be in South Dakota for the first time ever on Saturday when Nate Tibbetts returns home with his Phoenix Mercury.

I know Nate is really excited about coming home… He was born in Jefferson and went to HS in Sioux Falls at Roosevelt before starring for USD in college.

And he’s now the head coach of the Phoenix franchise in the WNBA. His players are pretty fired up about seeing where coach is from too.

Kiana Williams says, “Yeah it’s awesome. I’ve never been to South Dakota and probably never would have gone if it weren’t for the game on Saturday. Nate’s all excited and I know it’s going to be a great crowd. Wednesday we have our pre-season opener against a Japanese team so I’m excited about that. So yeah, it’s go time.”

DeWanna Bonner says, “We’re going to Nate’s hometown so that’s pretty cool. Everyone’s like, have you been there before and everybody said no so it’s like new beginnings, something new that we’ve never seen before because I’ve never been to South Dakota before. Year 16 and I’ve never been to South Dakota, how crazy is that?” (laughs)

The Mercury will take on the Chicago Sky at 3 o’clock Saturday at the Pentagon. You can watch the game on FOX.
