LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Looking for a unique opportunity to get closer to the stars and a meteor shower?
Lee Canyon and the Las Vegas Astronomical Society have partnered to present Stars on the Summit, an event that promises a unique experience. Guests will be able to ride the resort’s Bluebird quad chairlift to 9,370 feet to get a closer view of the stars and the Perseid Meteor Shower.
The popular annual shower started on July 14 and will end on September 1. The meteor shower peaks in mid-August and can send colorful fireballs with tails through the night sky.
The astronomical society members will be at the drop-off of the chairlift to share their knowledge. There will also be telescopes, astrophotography gear, video with real-time displays, and lasers to point out celestial features.
“Lee Canyon’s elevation and surrounding ridgelines block a good deal of the city’s light, giving us a respectably dark sky for being so close to Las Vegas. At the event, people will be able to see the tail end of the Perseid meteor shower,” Mig Ponce, LVAS president, said. “With the night
temperatures up to 30 degrees cooler than the valley, the experience will be comfortable and
memorable.”
The stargazing event is a first for Lee Canyon and will take place on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pre-registration is advised. The website will be accepting reservations within the next few days.
“It’s expected to be a popular event,” said Stephanie Forte, who does public relations for Lee Canyon. “Las Vegas has grown so new residents are discovering Lee Canyon.”
Tickets are $35 for guests ages 13 and older, $20 for children ages 7 to 12, and free for kids ages 6 and under. There is also a $55 VIP package that includes a dinner. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Las Vegas Astronomical Society and its education programs.
