Update 6:28 p.m.: Edina police have arrested three men on suspicion of murder. Law enforcement says the victim and suspects know each other and this was not a random incident.
West 66th Street has reopened to the public.
There is a large police presence in the area of Southdale Center in Edina due to an active search for homicide suspects, and several nearby buildings are locked down.
Edina police are asking the public to avoid the area near West 66th Street and York Avenue South until further notice.
What we know
Edina Police Chief Todd Milburn says officers received a report of a shooting in the area at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, officers found one person with a gunshot wound.
Officers provided aid but the victim died at the scene, which is outside a transitional affordable apartment complex, Milburn says.
According to police, the suspects ran away before officers got to the scene. At this time, no arrests have been made and a search is still ongoing.
Police are asking anyone with video or information that could help investigators to call 911 or contact Edina police at 952-826-1600 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-988-8477. Tipsters can stay anonymous.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are currently at the scene, including police from Edina, Eden Prairie, St. Louis Park and others. SWAT teams were also spotted.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS saw police K-9 units apparently searching around multiple buildings in the area.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS also confirmed that police requested the mall to go into lockdown temporarily. However, that has since been lifted.
M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital was also locked down, and several other nearby buildings were taking similar precautions. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS is seeking updates on those businesses.
The State Patrol is also detouring traffic away from the area, traffic cameras show.
