Indiana Fever star Lexie Hull has opened up on her strong bond with close friend and teammate Caitlin Clark, revealing the pair came close to a split during a demanding stretch this summer.

Hull entered free agency during a period of uncertainty across the league, as concerns mounted over a potential shutdown amid negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement ahead of the 2026 season.

A deal was ultimately reached in late March, establishing a significant new revenue-linked structure that sharply increased the salary cap from $1.5 million to $7 million for 2026. With teams suddenly operating under expanded budgets but limited time before the May 8 tip-off, the market moved quickly. Clark recently opened up about her feelings towards Aliyah Boston’s new salary.

As a restricted free agent, Hull remained under the control of the Indiana Fever, who retained the right to match any outside offers. She eventually agreed to a two-year contract worth approximately $1.6 million, a substantial rise from the under-$90,000 salary she earned in 2025.

With her return to the Fever looking likely but not assured, she admitted that the process of engaging with other teams felt unusual and unfamiliar.

Hull shared the news of her new deal alongside Clark during a trip to Augusta, where they watched Rory McIlroy win the Masters. She quickly formed a strong connection with Clark after the Fever selected her in 2024, a landmark draft that helped fuel unprecedented attention on the WNBA following Clark’s standout college career at Iowa.

“We connected the first day she got to Indiana, even on draft night,” Hull added. “I think I reached out and was so excited that she was coming. I think from that moment on there was just an immediate friendship. And with her being in Indiana during the offseason and her and her boyfriend and me and my fiance Will, it’s been an easy double date situation.”

Despite the intense spotlight on Clark, Hull says her teammate shows no outward sign of pressure behind the scenes. Hull described Clark as the “queen of silly” in the Indiana Fever locker room, highlighting a relaxed and light-hearted personality that contrasts with the scrutiny she faces on court.

“She’s a great role model but more than anything, having her as a friend has been really great,” the 26-year-old added. ‘What makes it so special for the team is everyone’s enjoying their time coming to work. I’ve been on teams in seasons where everyone’s kind of walking on eggshells. You don’t want to act goofy because you want to be serious, you want people to feel locked in.

“But I think we’ve been able to create a culture where you can come in and be yourself and be silly and be goofy at the same time, performing at your highest. I think people perform their best when they’re their happiest, and that’s showing up every day exactly how you are without having to kind of subdue your silliness.

“I enjoy my job so much and first couple of years in the W, I don’t think I could have said that as confidently. Everyone’s excited to hang out, so I’m really grateful to have a friend like that and, and be able to relate on so many things. But again, she’s probably the queen of the silly and the goofy. We’re really lucky to have her.”

Clark was also among the key supporters of Hull during a major off-court milestone, as she launched her own beauty brand, Forta, developed with performance-focused makeup designed specifically for in-game use.
