HOUSTON — An investigation is underway after police say a man breaking into cars in a parking lot in east Houston opened fire on employees before getting into a shootout with officers.
The Houston Police Department said this happened around 11:12 p.m. at a business along the East Freeway near Uvalde Road.
Police said when employees confronted the man about breaking into vehicles, he shot at them. When they went back into the store, HPD said the man followed the employees and kept shooting.
When officers got to the scene, a shootout broke out between police and the suspect in the store.
“No officers were injured, however, the suspect was struck more than one time,” said HPD Asst Chief Smith.
No employees were injured either.
Officers went on to provide first aid to the man until an ambulance showed up and rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting is being investigated by HPD’s Special Investigations and Homicide, and Internal Affairs units, as well as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
Body-worn camera video will be released within 30 days, as is department policy.
