The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t draft a punter to compete with Cameron Johnston in the 2026 NFL Draft, but they’ll bring at least one to rookie minicamp. Penn State’s Gabe Nwosu will attend Pittsburgh’s rookie minicamp, which is slated to take place from May 8-10, per Senior Specialist All-Star Game on Twitter.
Nwosu does not look like the average punter. At Penn State’s Pro Day, he measured in at 6061 and 313 pounds – size usually reserved for a lineman. He even has 34 1/2-inch arms, but he also has a big leg. With a career-long of 68 yards, Nwosu had 40 career punts, 38 of which came last season when he averaged 46.0 yards, ranking second in the Big Ten. He also made two tackles on coverage and served as Penn State’s kickoff specialist last year. He recorded 74 kickoffs for 4,606 yards and 36 touchbacks in 2025.
Nwosu was Penn State’s primary kickoff specialist from 2023-2025, while also kicking off 18 times in 2022, his redshirt freshman season. He was a five-star kicking and punting recruit by Kohl’s Kicking coming out of The Bullis School. His two brothers also played college football, Noah at Syracuse and Phillip at Amherst College in Massachusetts.
He was voted third-team All-Big Ten by coaches and All-Big Ten honorable mention by the media last season. He also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors. Nwosu was a redshirt senior from Dearborn, Michigan, who was Dane Brugler’s No. 7 best punter in his draft guide, The Beast.
Nwosu is the second known invite to Steelers rookie minicamp who isn’t a UDFA or draft pick, joining Navy’s Alex Tecza.
