Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham is opening up about her decision to get baptized as an adult, saying the moment marked a personal recommitment to her faith.

“I’ve always been a faithful person, but I just feel like now it’s my own decision,” Cunningham said. “One of the better things I’ve done in my life is getting baptized.”

Cunningham posted a video of her baptism on X with the caption, “Loving Jesus is fun, try it.” In a separate caption, she explained that while she was baptized as a child, she wanted to make the decision for herself as an adult.

“I got baptized when I was little, but I was feeling a tug on my heart to do it on my terms as an adult!” Cunningham wrote. “Such a fun, amazing day. Thank you, Jesus.”

The moment comes as Cunningham enters a new chapter with the Fever. The 29-year-old recently re-signed with Indiana on a one-year deal after her 2025 season ended early with a knee injury. Before the injury, she averaged 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds in 30 games while shooting a career-best 43.2% from three.

Cunningham has spoken publicly about her faith before. During her college career at Missouri, she told Vox Magazine that she built prayer into her pregame routine by tracing a cross over her shoes, knees, heart and forehead as a reminder of why she played.

“I started doing that, and I would focus on why I play and why He gave me these talents,” Cunningham said. “I threw this into my routine to put it in God’s hands. It calmed my mind, made everything a lot slower and helped me focus more.”

After being drafted by the Phoenix Mercury in 2019, Cunningham also said she believed the team was where God wanted her to be.

“I knew that this is where God wanted me to be,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham has said her faith in Christ helps lead her through daily life, including the attention and pressure that come with playing in the WNBA.

“My faith really keeps me grounded and it allows me to shine and just be myself,” she said.
