On Saturday around 2 a.m., police responded to a shooting at the Westminster Apartments located at Coulter Street and Westgate Pkwy.

ABC 7 News photojournalist Steve Douglass, who lives several blocks from the crime scene, was woken up by what he described as “machine gun fire” followed by dozens more shots.

A male was pronounced dead at the scene. Nine people were taken to the hospital, with five of them in critical condition. One of them died at the hospital.

APD released the name of one of the deceased, Ezekiel Rudy Almazan, 17, and listed the other as “16-year-old male.”

According to Amarillo police, a group of “juveniles and young adults” attending a party at another location, moved to the apartment complex.

Police said several people who were asked to leave the original party “later followed attendees” to the Westminster Apartments. They attempted to enter an apartment and opened fire with a “rifle-style weapon.”

In an afternoon update on May 2, APD said there are two suspects, ages and relation to guests are unknown and that no arrests have been made.

APD said no weapons were recovered directly from suspects, but a Glock 9mm handgun was located on a landing outside Apartment 244.

Investigators believe multiple weapons were used based on cartridge casings recovered in the alley south of the apartment complex.

Police are asking those in the Belmar area to check doorbell cameras and residential surveillance for unusual activity during the early morning hours.
