SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – It’s Installation Weekend for SculptureWalk Sioux Falls, with new statues being installed throughout downtown. One of those new statues honors not only one particular person, but the veteran community in South Dakota as a whole.
At the corner of Phillips Avenue and 11th Street, a statue honoring Medal of Honor recipient Michael J. Fitzmaurice was unveiled. The statue honors the legacy and service of Fitzmaurice, offering a rare, in-person unveiling.
“I never even knew that I was put in for an award. I was out of the service two years when they called up. I mean, I wear this for the people that didn’t come back, and my friends that did come back. It ain’t about me,” Fitzmaurice said.
Saturday’s unveiling also included a commemorative postcard signing with Fitzmaurice and statue sculptor Darwin Wolf.
