DETROIT — Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres left Saturday night’s game against the Texas Rangers with left side tightness, adding to the Tigers’ growing list of injury concerns.
It wasn’t immediately clear how Torres suffered the injury, but he had been thrown out at home in the first inning after an aggressive send from third-base coach Joey Cora. Torres remained in the game and singled in the second inning. But in the top of the fourth inning, Hao-Yu Lee entered in his place at second base.
Torres has been a fixture atop the Tigers’ order, hitting .259 with a .389 on-base percentage so far this season. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch had little update on Torres’ status after the game but said the second baseman will undergo a full evaluation.
“He loves to play, so I immediately didn’t feel great when he asked to come out,” Hinch said. “But I’m glad he did and didn’t do anything further. We’ll see what comes of it.”
Torres’ injury is just the latest in a concerning string of injuries that is now testing the Tigers’ roster. The Tigers already have 13 players on the major-league injured list after Will Vest went to the IL on Saturday with right forearm inflammation. Initial tests did not reveal any structural damage to Vest’s arm. The reliever had not pitched since Sunday as the Tigers allowed him to rest. But when his symptoms did not improve, the team made the move to place Vest on the IL.
With an already taxed bullpen, the Tigers called up right-hander Ricky Vanasco to take Vest’s spot, but on a busy day of injury news, Hinch also said Kenley Jansen is day to day with right groin soreness. Although Hinch seemed confident Jansen could avoid an IL stint, the injury is in Jansen’s plant leg. Jansen received treatment and evaluation and said he played catch for the first time in three days on Friday.
“When you can’t push off, it’s tough,” he said. “Definitely not healthy. I don’t want to cost the team games if I’m not right.”
The Tigers are already without key position players in Javier Báez (right ankle sprain) and Parker Meadows (broken left arm). Although Zach McKinstry (left hip/abdominal inflammation) has started a rehab assignment and could soon return, the Tigers might be without another key bat in Torres.
