WASHINGTON (7News) — A man is injured after a shooting involving U.S. Secret Service agents that happened less than a block from the Washington Monument, according to the U.S. Secret Service and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
According to the Secret Service, plainclothes agents spotted a man somewhere near the White House perimeter who appeared to be carrying a firearm. The Secret Service didn’t say exactly where the man was spotted, but said it was not on the property of the White House itself. The plainclothes agents called for uniformed officers, who then went to make contact with the man, but he took off running.
During the chase, investigators said the man opened fire on the Secret Service officers, who then returned fire. The man was taken to the hospital, but officials did not provide details on his condition. A child in the area was also hit during the gunfire, but is expected to be OK.
A witness says the boy who was hit appeared to be a teenager. 7News was there as the boy the witness identified walked with several people to an ambulance, which later took him to the hospital. The teen appeared to have a slight limp but did not seem to be seriously injured. The Secret Service said they believe the suspect’s gunshot hit the boy.
The incident happened near the intersection of 15th Street SW and Independence Avenue.
The White House was briefly placed on lockdown, according to the Associated Press.

A witness tells 7News a motorcade went by moments before the gunfire. The Secret Service said the motorcade was for Vice President JD Vance, adding that there is no indication at this time the man was targeting Vance or the motorcade, but adding that Secret Service “will get to the bottom of that.”

Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn was also asked if what happened Monday had any connection to attempts on the life of President Trump such the recent incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“Whether or not it was directed to the president or not, I don’t know, but we will find out,” Quinn said.
For a time police closed 15th Street from Constitution Avenue NW to Maine Avenue SW. They also closed Independence Avenue SW from 14th Street to 15th Street SW, including the on-ramp. However, by Monday evening, all roads had opened back up and crews were preparing to do what appeared to be unrelated roadwork in that area.
