LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — Cinco de Mayo is bringing a little extra sparkle to Dickey-Stephens Park, where the Arkansas Travelers are rolling out a brand-new look, a few festive specials and a familiar big-league name.
The Travelers are debuting their new Diamantes jerseys and logo for a game scheduled for 6:35 p.m. tonight. Gates open at 5:35 p.m. The team’s new Diamantes branding features new colors and a new design meant to bring more excitement and connect with the community, including a nod to the Seattle Mariners’ colors.
Fans coming out for the Cinco de Mayo celebration can also expect drink and food specials, including $3 margaritas. The ballpark’s Diamantes Cantina is also offering items such as a nacho bowl and a rice bowl.
The Diamantes identity is also part of the team’s outreach to the local Hispanic community through a Major League Baseball initiative called Copa de la Diversion. The Travelers said this is their ninth year participating in the program, which highlights baseball’s diversity and recognizes the many Latin players in the sport. The team noted there are more than 45,000 Latin speakers in the community and said the goal is to make sure those fans know they’re welcome at Travelers games.
On the field, the Travelers said fans could get a close-up look at a Mariners player during a rehab assignment. The team said Brandon Donovan, a Seattle Mariners starter, is expected to be on the field tonight for a rehab start. The Travelers explained that as Seattle’s minor league affiliate, their roster is made up of players drafted by the Mariners, and rehab assignments can bring major leaguers to town while they work back from injury.
The theme changes won’t stop with Diamantes. Later this week, the Travelers plan to transform into the Mad Mallards, a tribute to Arkansas’ duck-hunting tradition and the state’s ties to rice farming. The team said it partners with Ducks Unlimited for the Mad Mallards promotion, which will include duck calls and duck wings at the ballpark.
