The city of Aspen is planning pedestrian and stormwater drainage improvements for several intersections along Main Street.
Aspen City Council approved a contract with Stutsman Gerbaz Inc. last week to design the project that will replace aging stormwater infrastructure and update sidewalk accessibility. The project will address six intersections on Main Street: the southwest corners of First through Sixth streets and the northwest corner of First Street.
“We’re updating a combination of aging infrastructure, damaged infrastructure and some [Americans with Disabilities Act] compliance for some sidewalks that fell out of compliance with the ADA standard,” said Wyatt Young, a project manager in the city engineering department.
The city council hasn’t approved a construction contract for the project yet, and construction is still to be determined, Young said.
But a memo to council about the design contract anticipates a construction window of September through October with a completion target of Oct. 31. According to the memo, the design phase will last through the summer.
While construction takes place, there will be single-lane closures on Main Street at the intersections where the work will take place, Young said. The closures will be intermittent as construction crews move to each intersection.
The city has budgeted $1.07 million for the project intended to cover both design and construction. The design contract with Stutsman Gerbaz was $106,500. It was one of four firms that responded to the city’s request for proposals for design services.
It was the most expensive bid, but according to the memo, it ranked the highest overall under weighted criteria of management experience and capabilities, project experience and capabilities, financial stability and capacity, and a fee proposal.
