Missing six players who didn’t make the trip, the University at Albany women’s lacrosse team ended its season with a 21-7 loss to fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Homewood Field in Baltimore.

UAlbany starters Paisley Cook and Kimaura Schindler did not travel because of “violations of team rules,” according to an athletic department statement.

In addition, UAlbany announced four other unidentified players chose not to travel with the team to Baltimore. No reason was given. Starting junior defender Reggie Williams also didn’t play on Friday. A UAlbany spokesman declined to say if she was among the players who didn’t travel.

The spokesman said all six players are still on the team “as of this moment.”

Cook, a junior midfielder from Akwesasne, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the America East Conference Tournament. Schindler, a junior from Six Nations, Ontario, is a starting defender. She transferred two years ago from Xavier University.

After the match, UAlbany coach Katie Thomson declined to answer any questions about the missing players or how their absence affected the Great Danes. She referred to the UAlbany prepared statement.

Graduate attack Jaedyn Frink gave UAlbany a 1-0 lead 40 seconds into the match before Johns Hopkins erupted with 18 consecutive goals to take an 18-1 lead in the third quarter.

“We had a great start and Hopkins is a really strong team and very dynamic,” Thomson said by phone. “They were able to get some momentum going there in that opening quarter.”

UAlbany finished its season at 12-5. Johns Hopkins improved to 15-4 and will face either Army or Fairfield in a second-round match on Sunday in Baltimore.

The Blue Jays improved to 3-0 all-time against the Great Danes, including wins in 2023 and 2024.

“We knew they were really strong and balanced in all their units,” Thomson said. “We played against them a couple of years ago. They’re playing at a really high level right now and just as we anticipated.”

UAlbany senior goalie Grace Cincebox, who played her first college game at Johns Hopkins three years ago, ended her career with seven saves on the same field on Friday.

Great Danes senior attack Kloey Roos had a hat trick and Frink scored twice. Johns Hopkins senior attack Ava Angello led the Blue Jays with seven goals.

“Really proud of the season that we had,” Thomson said. “It was very exciting and just a great opportunity to be able to compete in the NCAA Tournament and I’m just really proud of the journey we went on this season.”
