A famous X-Men hero finally puts their magical enhancement to good use, but they have to pay the price. For many of the X-Men, their superhuman gifts are entirely contained within, and expressed through, their own natural bodies. Mutants like Cyclops or Havok act as living conduits for devastating concussive and cosmic energy generated internally, while powerhouse leads like Colossus and Emma Frost physically transform their organic flesh into steel and diamond to engage in frontline combat. More intricate physiological powers, such as Nightcrawler’s teleportation and Jean Grey’s telekinetic shields, rely on their biological limits.

A fascinating subset of mutants possesses mutant abilities that require external catalysts or conduits to be effectively channeled. Wolverine’s main weapon is his retractable bone claws, while Bishop funnels the metabolized energy he absorbs directly through specialized firearms. Similarly, Magik channels her energy through the mystical Soulsword, and Gambit’s energy manipulation allows him to turn virtually any mundane item into an explosive. While he can supercharge anything from a staff to a pebble, Remy LeBeau’s signature flair is his iconic deck of playing cards.

Like many other mutant heroes before him, it’s Gambit’s turn to show off a secondary power-up that perfectly complements his ultra-powerful kinetic abilities.

Gambit Starts To Transform Into A Dragon Thanks To The Eye Of Agamotto

Rogue #5; Written By Erica Schultz; Art By Luigi Zagaria, And Espen Grundetjern

Remy LeBeau has kept his recent power upgrade relatively contained since he acquired the Eye of Agamotto from the mythical dragon Sadurang, only unleashing a fragment of its power under very specific circumstances. However, Gambit’s biggest weakness is Rogue, and Rogue is currently needing all the help she can get to atone for the sins she committed in her early, villainous days. To locate one of her first victims, John Stelton, Rogue asks Gambit to use the Eye of Agamotto, which causes Gambit’s back to sprout dragon scales.

The X-Men boast some of the strongest heroes in the Marvel Universe – here are their most physically powerful members of all time.

The Eye of Agamotto possesses an immense amount of power that could easily make Gambit the most powerful mutant currently on Earth. Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto is among the best tools in the Sorcerer Supreme’s arsenal, after all. However, Sadurang’s most powerful weapon requires its users to pay the price for such an upgrade. Gambit may suffer an uncomfortable, if not painful, transformation into a dragon like Sadurang, and he may not be able to revert to his regular form if he crosses a line.

Gambit’s Secondary Enhancement Is Among The X-Men’s Biggest Upgrades

Remy LeBeau Gets His Own, Magical Version Of Wolverine’s Weapon X

The Marvel Universe has a long history of taking established mutants and pushing their abilities to god-tier levels through external enhancements, secondary mutations, or biological overhauls. The most famous example is Wolverine, whose baseline feral tracking and healing factor were complemented by the adamantium skeleton coating he got from the Weapon X program. Similarly, Apocalypse remade Angel into the lethal razor-winged Archangel through celestial genetic engineering, and Rogue received an Avenger-level upgrade after absorbing Carol Danvers’ flight, invulnerability, and super-strength.

Much like multiple other X-Men upgrades that came before his, Gambit’s adoption of Sadurang’s Eye of Agamotto isn’t free. Weapon X deeply affected Wolverine’s psyche, and his skeleton’s adamantium forces his healing factor to work in perpetuity. Emma Frost’s diamond state completely freezes her capacity for empathy, leaving her emotionally dead inside. And currently, Rogue is beginning to remember the traumatic events her power-absorbing powers made her go through. For Gambit, wielding an artifact of supreme, ancient sorcery like Sadurang’s Eye slowly transforms his body into a dragon-like creature, and his mind could follow suit.

Do you think Gambit will fully transform into a dragon?
