STERLING, Va. (7News) — A Sterling resident opened his front door Monday morning to a startling sight: a peacock staring right back at him.
John Jones said he was checking on Amazon packages when he made the discovery.
Jones told 7News he believes the peacock is a lost pet, noting the bird seemed frightened.
Although frightened, the bird also seemed remarkably comfortable in Jones’ backyard.
“He wouldn’t go away! And so, he was hanging until now. So he’s been here for three and a half hours,” Jones laughed.
Jones said he made several calls to wildlife services, but no one seemed to know what to do with a peacock.
In the meantime, Jones looked up what to feed peacocks.
“Well, he’s got food. Like I said, I looked it up, they love sunflower seeds, and so that’s what I feed the birds, and he’s got water, so he can hang. He won’t go hungry,” Jones said.
Jones said he’s now hoping that someone will recognize the peacock so it can be reunited with its owner.
” I hope somebody sees this and they say, ‘Hey, there’s my peacock!'” Jones added.
7News reached out to the Virginia Department of Wildlife and will update this report once we get a response.
