The Pittsburgh Steelers rebuilt their wide receiver group this offseason, trading for Michael Pittman Jr. and drafting Germie Bernard. Pittman figures to be the team’s No. 2 receiver beside DK Metcalf, while Bernard could fight for the No. 3 spot. It looks like the Steelers are set at wideout, but perhaps they could add another veteran. Pittman took a shot at trying to lure former Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster back to Pittsburgh.

“When you coming home, OG?” Pittman asked Smith-Schuster in the comments under his recent Instagram post.

The Steelers selected Smith-Schuster in the second round of the 2017 drafted, and he spent five seasons with them. Smith-Schuster made an instant impact, having nearly 1,000 receiving yards as a rookie. Then, he made his lone Pro Bowl in his second year, catching 111 passes for 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns.

Unfortunately, injuries took their toll on Smith-Schuster, slowing him down. He left the Steelers after the 2021 season, and he’s bounced around the league since then. While he’s had some success, including helping the Kansas City Chiefs win a Super Bowl, he’s never hit the same highs as he did with the Steelers.

Smith-Schuster is currently a free agent, and he’s still only 29 years old. However, he didn’t look like the same player in 2025, catching 33 passes for 345 yards and one touchdown. While he could be a decent option in case of an emergency, bringing him back to Pittsburgh might not make sense.

It’s not surprising that Pittman wants to play with Smith-Schuster, though. The two were teammates for a year in college at USC. It seems like the two of them still have a good relationship, too.

The Steelers’ receiver room looks full currently, though. Metcalf and Pittman are the top two. Bernard and Roman Wilson figure to compete for the No. 3 job. Also, Ben Skowronek and Kaden Wetjen look like they could be valuable special teams players.

Perhaps the Steelers can kick the tires on Smith-Schuster if any of those players get hurt. However, it doesn’t feel like he’d take a roster spot from any of the Steelers’ current receivers. Smith-Schuster had a good run in Pittsburgh, but that may all be in the past.
